The broad aim of this website is to help and inspire
those on the road to recovery. The following account relates to the healing
experiences of Andrew Penman who in March 1989 was hit by a motor car and was
hospitalised and spent months in various intensive care and trauma departments
of the University Hospital of Wales, Llandough hospital, Cardiff; and also
Rookwood Hospital, South Wales.
Andrews ‘long and winding road’ has been a tortuous and difficult one, his
recovery from brain damage, taking years, not months.
Maybe you or someone you know has suffered from brain damage. The following
account is a mix of Andrew’s own words via a series of extracts from diaries
which he has kept for eleven years, as well as some extracts from his mother’s
diaries ( in the early days when Andrew was unable to write.....in fact in the
very early days Andrew was unable to speak or see) There are also published
reports from newspapers and magazines, and some other reported items when the
editor of this article interviewed Andrew at his home in Canton, Cardiff in
January 2001.
It is Andrew’s desire that this website/article will inspire others on the road
to their recovery. It has taken many years for Andrew to get himself well and
truly back on his feet, and in his own words he still has a way to go, but he
feels sure that he can help other sufferers to recognise that ‘where there is a
will there is a way’ and that many of the exercises and healing techniques that
he has employed over the months and years can be used by others to recover from
their traumas.
The story will stand of great interest to those who have suffered from brain
damage as a result of a traumatic accident, but in general, it is hoped that
many on the road to recovery from other, maybe unrelated illnesses, might well
draw real inspiration from Andrew’s story.
Andrew has kept a diary for eleven years (initially kept by his mother), and it
is his longer term intention to publish many of the extracts in book form so
that what he has learnt maybe passed on to a greater number of people. This web
site is however, he feels, a most potent starting point, but in reality
represents only a small proportion of the full story.
